Strawberry Spotlight: Steve Poltz – Stardust and Satellites

A pandemic blessing? During Covid-style, outdoor Nashville hangs with the Wood Brothers, Steve Poltz caught a whim to record a song with Oliver Wood and Jano Rix.  Lo and behold, it sparked a whole new Steve Poltz album produced by Oliver and Jano, titled Stardust and Satellites.

On one of the last nights of the recording sessions, Steve locked himself up in his writing room and within an hour, had conjured the catchy, effervescent “Can O’ Pop,” destined to be the radio single for the 2022 release.

“Jano from The Wood Brothers was leaving the studio, and I asked him to give me a beat, and I told him I’d write a song with the beat he gave me,” recalls Steve. The exuberant, syncopated groove seems to bubble up as Steve admits, “I want to feel the fizzy rhythm with you.”

Let’s get fizzy with Mr. Bubbly himself, Steve Poltz, Sunday at Strawberry!

STRAWBERRY’S FAVORITE STATIONS

A few weeks we surveyed the Strawberry audience to learn more about our community’s favorite radio stations, programs, and broadcasters. We used your responses to create a list of around 50 different stations, outlets, and programs that you can easily link to. While it’s far from complete, and probably never will be, we will do our best to add to this list  of Strawberry’s Favorite Stations as time goes on, and new submissions come in. This process has been informative, as well as an inspirational discovery of culture and community across the region, and far beyond. Thank you so much for your input and happy listening!

STRAWBERRY MEMORIAL TRIBUTE

By the time the festival rolls around it will have been a full three years since the Strawberry family has been together. Those 36 months have been full of challenges and change. And loss. Loss has been a regular part of life for the Strawberry family, but in normal times we have been able to gather again after three months or nine months to remember and grieve together. Because of the current three-year hiatus, Strawberry staff would like to create an informal video tribute to those who have been lost since the last festival in spring, 2019. The looping video will be shared inside at the “Northern Mines” building, beginning after the Revival on Sunday, and will play continuously through the end of the last act that night.

If you have someone who has passed and you would like to honor them in this video please submit images and text by May 15th to StrawberryMemorial@gmail.com.

We request the following:

  • Their name and/or nickname.
  • Between 1 and 10 digital images, preferably including pictures of them from past festivals.
  • What was their first festival? Their last festival?
  • Were they patrons or volunteers? If volunteer what was their role?
  • What was their camp affiliation?
  • What is some information that sheds light on their Strawberry experience (e.g. favorite part of Strawberry or instruments played)?

Thank you in advance for your help with this project. We look forward to seeing you in May.

STRAWBERRY SPOTLIGHT: SUNNY WAR GIVES BACK

She’s known for her unique, fingerstyle guitar chops and razor-sharp songwriting, but do you know what else Sunny War does? In January of 2020, she started a Los Angeles, skid row chapter of Food Not Bombs.

Says Sunny, “I can’t do much, but Food Not Bombs helps us come together as a community and realize that we are a community. Now I see people every week and we know each other. It’s also about not looking away when you see somebody in this situation.”

In addition to helping hungry folks with Food Not Bombs, Sunny creates beautiful music to bring refuge to all of us–to bring solace in hard times. Give her a listen and check out her main stage set, first thing Saturday morning at Spring Strawberry!

STRAWBERRY 2022 PUBLIC RADIO PROMO

Spring 2021 Berry On! Broadcast

What is your favorite public/community radio station? Please take our quick survey to share to whom, to what, and where you listen. Alternatively, you can send your thoughts by email to info@strawberrymusic.com with the words “I HEART RADIO” in the subject line. Your input will assist our campaign to underwrite the noncommercial media outlets that serve your home communities, in promotion of the Spring 2022 Strawberry Music Festival.

Strawberry has always had a special affinity for radio. Our own free form festival radio was conceived and created by the legendary broadcaster Thom O’hair, in 1985. Since that time, Hog Ranch Radio has become a crucial component of the festival program, as well as the community culture at Strawberry.

Thank you for taking our survey and for keeping it real. We are looking forward to an epic reunion of family and friends this spring and hope to see you there!

STRAWBERRY SPOTLIGHT: JOHN CRAIGIE’S LATEST RELEASE

John Craigie’s got a new album called Mermaid Salt dropping on April 15th, and the second single, Helena, is available TODAY.

Here’s the link: https://smarturl.it/JC-Helena

He’s described by The Stranger as “the lovechild of John Prine and Mitch Hedberg with a vagabond troubadour edge,” and he’s known for his storytelling chops. On Mermaid Salt, he says “we witness revenge unfurled in flames, watch a landlocked mermaid’s escape, and fall asleep under a meteor shower.”  Well, that might leave you on the edge of your camp chair!

Let’s welcome John back to the festival when he kicks off our glorious Saturday evening at Strawberry.
