THE HEIFER BELLES ADD LOCAL FLAVOR TO SPRING LINEUP
The Heifer Belles began as friends getting together for some casual picking and singing. The next thing you know their special blend of back porch Americana was being drawn out of the living room and onto the stage. These local Grass Valley gals have easily charmed audiences ever since, with their lovely three part harmony on top of a perfectly paired three piece instrumentation. Juliet Gobert is the group’s in house songwriter, lead singer, and guitar player. Both Kim Rogers, on pedal steel, and Toni Valenta, on bass, are harmony vocalists. With original material in tow and two thoughtfully crafted albums to show, we’re so pleased to welcome The Heifer Belles to the Strawberry’s Spring Festival stage.
NORTH COUNTRY BLUE TO KICK OFF SPRING FEST
Known as some of the best youth bluegrass musicians in California, North Country Blue consists of Tessa Schwartz, (vocals, fiddle), Daisy Kerr (vocals, guitar), Megan January (vocals, bass, fiddle), Ida Winfree (vocals, mandolin, bass). These talented instrumentalists are stalwarts in the California Bluegrass Association’s “Kids on Bluegrass” program and have several years’ band experience among them despite their young age. How better to begin Spring’s Main Stage festivities than with the next generation of bluegrass musicians?

THE SHERMAN HOLMES PROJECT JOINS THE FALL LINEUP
Last year saw esteemed singer and bassist, Sherman Holmes, release his first solo recording since the passing of his brother and musical partners, both in 2015. While “The Richmond Sessions” is dedicated to the memories of Wendell Holmes and Popsy Dixon, the album is no somber affair. Fans of Holmes Brothers will feel right at home with The Sherman Holmes Project’s blend of bluegrass, gritty rock, gospel and blues. As much as Sherman Holmes has a knack for seamlessly blending an eclectic mix of genres, he’s also bringing together a wide ranging collaboration of virtuoso musicians and instrumentalists. We’re especially pleased to have Northern California’s own homegrown dobro wizard, Rob Ickes, and young guitar maestro, Trey Hensley, performing together on Friday, and then again as part of The Sherman Holmes Project on Saturday.
Buy your 2-, 3-, or 4-Day camping tickets for this very special performance now.
MARLEY’S GHOST RETURNS FOR SPRING FESTIVAL
Easily one of Strawberry’s top five frequent flyers, starting with their first Main Stage appearance in 1986, Marley’s Ghost continues to enchant the audience with their superbly diverse style and impeccable delivery, each and every time. Nothing less than a national treasure, Marley’s Ghost is the capable inheritor of the archetypal Americana blueprint drawn up by The Band. A virtuoso aggregation composed of singer/multi-instrumentalists Dan Wheetman, Jon Wilcox, Mike Phelan, Ed Littlefield Jr., Jerry Fletcher, and Bob Nichols, the band can sing and play anything with spot-on feel, from roots to rock, blues to bluegrass, soulful gospel to stone country. Which is exactly what they’ve been doing—to the ongoing delight of a fervent cult that includes many of their fellow musicians—throughout their three decades as a working unit. If you’re not already a Marley’s convert, watch a few videos to see what all the fuss is about. And then we’ll see you there, on Saturday afternoon, at Spring Berry.
NICKI BLUHM RETURNS FOR FALL BERRY
After nearly a decade spent with the Gramblers, and recent high-profile collaborations (Phil Lesh, Infamous StringDusters, Ryan Adams), and a split from her husband and musical mentor, vocalist and songwriter Nicki Bluhm is stepping out on her own with her new album, TO RISE YOU GOTTA FALL. The songs were written over a two-year period in Bluhm’s life and chronicle her fundamental life changes, which found the West Coast native living in Nashville, TN. “These songs are the conversations I never got to have, the words I never had the chance to say, and the catharsis I wouldn’t have survived without,” she says. Recorded in Memphis, TN at legendary Sam Phillips Recording, Bluhm brought in producer Matt Ross-Spang (Margo Price, Jason Isbell), for these live band, analog sessions. The studio band includes Will Sexton (guitar), Ross-Spang (guitars), Ken Coomer (drums and percussion), Al Gamble (Hammond B3), Rick Steff (piano), Dave Smith (bass), with Sam Shoup (string arrangements) and various special guests. TO RISE YOU GOTTA FALL tells the story of a woman searching for light among darkness and reveals her emergence as a powerful songwriter and vocalist of great depth and immediacy.
