SUGISTUFFBYJEN

These unique Yakisugi cedar wood pieces are hand torched, scraped and stained in these wild and crazy colors to make just about anything. Artist and Woodworker Jennifer Kingston became obsessed with the Yakisugi process when she first saw it on social media. Since then, she has been perfecting her own process to produce these amazing colors.

This process is an ancient Japanese style of charring Japanese cedar boards and using them for siding on houses that have stood for centuries in Japan. This process makes the wood resistant to rot, pests and weather, so the boards work great for outdoor use even without a finish on them. However, Kingston uses a light finish just to bring out the colors and ensure their vibrancy. The process has also been referred to as "shou sugi ban", which loosely translates to "charred cedar".
