“Could This Kid Be the Next Allison Krauss?” Mother Jones magazine asked about AJ Lee — and for good reason. She won the Northern California Bluegrass Society’s Best Female Vocalist award nine times by age 21!
Singer, songwriter, and mandolinist Lee, ”exhibiting a musical depth and maturity beyond her years” (SF Chronicle), has led the band since their first appearance back in the days of 2015, in Santa Cruz.
“‘The Blue Summit way,’ she said, ‘is that we tend to be eclectic in our genres, but we bring it all together in a cohesive way. Scott Gates (guitar) is our ‘old country’ guy. Sully Tuttle (also guitar) tends to be a little more indie. And my stuff has a little more groove to it,’” (Santa Cruz Sentinel). Add Jan Purat on fiddle and Chad Bowen on upright bass, and this band can convey about any style through a fierce, first-class lens of bluegrass.
What’s more, we’ve been in love with this California-homegrown group since we first met. We heard they played here last year, but that was, like, eons ago. Who is 100% ready for AJ Lee and Blue Summit to bring it to the music meadow on Sunday night at Strawberry?!
