IN MEMORY OF PETE SIEGFRIED

We would like to acknowledge the passing late last month of beloved musician, Pete Siegfried, who was a dear friend to many in the Grass Valley area.

Pete graced the Strawberry stage as part of the acclaimed Americana duo, Barwick and Siegfried, at the Fall 2014, Spring 2017, and Spring 2018 Festivals as well as a founding member of the popular bluegrass band, Mountain Laurel, at the Spring 2008 Festival. Pete will be long remembered among our music community for his distinctive and expressive tenor vocals, adept instrumentation, and enchanting collaboration with bandmate, Kathy Barwick.

The Strawberry community extends its collective heart and deepest condolences to Pete’s family and wide circle of friends.

PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT – JONTAVIOUS WILLIS

Jontavious Willis is resolved in his mission: to reinvigorate today’s Blues with the spirit of the past.

“His writing is firmly contemporary at the same time that his playing is rooted in the tradition of Country Blues.” – Lizzie No, Folk Alley

Inspired by a time when the Blues were plentiful and rhythm reigned supreme, Jontavious leverages his unique sound—a synthesis of his Georgia heritage and reverence for traditional Blues—to get the world dancing again.

“‘I want to get folks involved in my music, whether it’s listening or dancing. I want there to be a relationship for the time that we have.’” – Jontavious Willis, as told to Trevor Christian, Country Pocket, WUSB

A Grammy-nominated musician and songwriter, Jontavious performs original, toe-tapping tunes in the style of Delta, Piedmont, Texas, and Gospel Blues. Dynamic vocals, technical prowess, and an abundance of Southern charm keep Jontavious sending jolts of vitality through the Blues community.

We can’t wait for Jontavious Willis to jolt the Strawberry stage on Saturday, May 24th! Listen and learn more here.

PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT – JOHN REISCHMAN AND THE JAYBIRDS

John Reischman and the Jaybirds fashion a stylish take on bluegrass that seamlessly blends original songs and instrumentals with Appalachian old-time music for a truly unique band sound.

“. . .they can sing and play anything bluegrass or country. And do. They may make it sound easy (the really good ones do), but it isn’t.” – Frank Gutch Jr., No Depression

Now in their 20th year, with seven acclaimed albums and two Juno nominations, the Jaybirds are simultaneously innovative and unadorned, sophisticated and stripped-down, happily old-fashioned and 21st-century contemporary.

The powerful mandolinist and composer John Reischman is joined by Patrick Sauber (guitarist), Greg Spatz (fiddler), Trisha Gagnon (vocals/bass), and Nick Hornbuckle (banjo). Catch John Reischman & the Jaybirds at Strawberry on Thursday, May 22nd! Listen and learn more here.

PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT – EAST NASH GRASS

East Nash Grass is one of the hottest young bands in Bluegrass.

They are far more than impressive instrumental technicians. As a group that came together organically on Nashville’s East Side, playing tiny stages for the love of it between tours backing bigger acts, they have a hard-forged bond that’s reflected in their stage chemistry.

“East Nash Grass not only has great cohesiveness, but also loads of versatility.” – Braeden Paul, Bluegrass Today

Like birds in a flock, each keenly aware of one another’s every move, the pickers in East Nash Grass fly in tight formation, no matter the twists and turns the moment demands.

East Nash Grass is Maddie Denton (fiddle), Cory Walker (banjo), Harry Clark (mandolin), Jeff Partin (bass), and frontman James Kee. This powerhouse leader of the next generation in bluegrass excellence will hit the Strawberry stage on Sunday, May 25th! Listen and learn more here.
