Once upon a time, our festivities took place in a lush forest, on magic land. Children swam in pristine waters and played on granite boulders scattered throughout camp. Music drifted through tall trees and we gathered under a sea of bright stars. Neighbors welcomed us into their beautifully decorated camps and cabins as we wandered the pine needle covered pathways that connected us to each other, and to the earth. We left our troubles and the complications of modern life miles behind, where the reach of signals and satellites began to fade. We were in paradise, and the benefit to ourselves and others rippled out beyond our own shores!
Of course, Strawberry is still pretty great in its current location, but what if it could be better than ever before?!? What if we could return to an immersive wilderness experience? What if there was a place we knew we could stay, invest ourselves in, and expand our seasonal music and arts programming? What if there was a magical place, centrally located in the Sierras, that could benefit tremendously from our stewardship? What if we could return to our true place of origin, without sacrificing the features that are important to our festival community?
Camp John Mensinger is a historic logging camp in the Stanislaus National Forest that was donated to the Yosemite Greater Counsel by the Pickering Lumber Company in 1969. The 168-acre camp, located past Beardsley Dam, operated as a Scouts camp from 1976 – 2018. In 2019, financial issues and deferred maintenance caused the Yosemite Greater Council to shut the camp and list the property for $1,750,000.
